Berlin Chili Fest Heat Awards – As a jury member
The Berlin Chili Fest is back – and this year with a very special highlight: the Heat Awards. A competition where the best hot sauces in Europe go head-to-head, judged by an expert jury. And yes, I'm part of it. Pikantista! As someone who has been deeply involved in the European chili scene for over 10 years – from Pika Pika to Chili Mafia, and the projects chili-saucen.com and chili-plants.com – this is not only an honor but also a damn exciting challenge.
The Heat Awards are no ordinary tasting. Each jury member is assigned 8 hot sauces, and each one is evaluated based on 7 clearly defined characteristics – digitally, via a QR code directly on site. No gut feelings, no quick notes on scraps of paper. Here, precision, fairness, and genuine expertise count.
How do the Heat Awards work?
The concept is straightforward but ingeniously thought out. Each jury member receives a selection of 8 hot sauces – blind-tasted, of course. No labels, no brands, no preconceived notions. Only the sauce matters.
For each hot sauce, you scan a QR code, which leads directly to an online evaluation form. There, 7 characteristics are individually assessed:
- Heat – How intense is the burn? From mild to brutal.
- Aroma – What do you smell? Smoke, fruit, vinegar, garlic?
- Flavor – The most important point: How does the sauce really taste?
- Consistency – Too thin? Too thick? Or just right?
- Afterburn – How long does the heat last? Short, long, unbearable?
- Balance – Do all components work together?
- Originality – Is the sauce unique or interchangeable?
Each of these characteristics is evaluated individually. The result is an overall picture that is fair, transparent, and comprehensible. No arbitrariness, no "that feels somehow good." Just hard facts – and of course, a burning palate.
Why the Berlin Chili Fest is so special
The Berlin Chili Fest is not just any food festival. It is the event for everyone who takes chili seriously. Producers, retailers, enthusiasts – they all come together to share their passion. The Heat Awards are the highlight: a fair competition that reveals who truly makes the best hot sauces in Europe.
What distinguishes the Heat Awards from other competitions is the digital evaluation. No paperwork, no lost notes, no retrospective corrections. Everything runs in real-time via QR codes – transparent, traceable, and fair.
And the best part: You can be there live. On TikTok @pikantista, I post videos from the event – the tastings, the reactions, the best (and most brutal) hot sauces. If you want to see how a jury slowly loses its mind after 8 hot sauces in a row – follow me there.
What makes a good hot sauce?
After years in the scene, I have a clear opinion: a good hot sauce is more than just hot. Heat is important, of course – but it must be balanced. A sauce that just burns is boring. A sauce that burns AND tastes good is great.
The 7 evaluation criteria of the Heat Awards reflect exactly that:
- Heat alone is not enough. If the sauce is just fire, but no flavor – what's the point?
- Aroma matters. The first impression when you open the bottle says a lot about the quality.
- Consistency is crucial. Too thin, and it just runs off. Too thick, and it sticks. There's a Goldilocks window – and the best sauces hit it.
- Balance is King. Heat, acidity, sweetness, salt – everything must work together. If one element dominates, the whole sauce tips over.
- Originality counts. There are thousands of hot sauces out there. The best ones have something that makes them unique.
These are exactly the points we evaluate at the Heat Awards. And at the end of the day, it's not the hottest sauce that wins – but the best one.
Behind the scenes: 8 Sauces, 7 Criteria, 1 Jury
Tasting 8 hot sauces in a row sounds fun at first. And it is – for the first three. After that, it gets serious. Your palate burns, your taste buds rebel, and at some point, you ask yourself: Was that smoky, or am I just imagining it?
That's why digital evaluation via QR codes is so important. You can record your impressions immediately, before the next sauce overrides everything. You scan the code, evaluate the 7 characteristics, submit – done. No time for doubts, no retrospective interpretations. Just your honest, immediate opinion.
And yes, it's exhausting. But it's also incredibly exciting. Because you see how much work, passion, and creativity goes into these sauces. Each one has a story – and the best ones tell it to you directly on your tongue.
