It was later replaced by the Carolina Reaper as the hottest chili in the world. The plant grows about 1.20 m tall but can stay shorter depending on the pot. Bhut Jolokia are very productive when well cared for.

The fruits are very hot but also very aromatic. They have a wavy surface and grow 5 to 8 cm long. They ripen from green to red or, in other varieties, to orange, brown or ivory. Wearing gloves when harvesting and processing the fruits is advisable. Soak the seeds in chamomile tea before sowing to disinfect them.

After sowing, keep the substrate moist at all times and do not let the temperature drop below 25°C. Temperatures of 26°C to 32°C are ideal. It usually takes up to 5 weeks for the first seedlings to appear. It can take five to six months from sowing to ripe fruit.
