The plant grows about 1.20 m tall but can stay shorter depending on the pot. Bhut Jolokia are very productive when well cared for. They need a lot of warmth when growing, and the pods have a very long ripening period, so up to 160 days can pass from sowing to harvest.
Bhut Jolokia fruits are very hot but also very aromatic. They have a wavy surface and grow 5 to 8 cm long. They ripen from green to red or, in other varieties, to orange, brown or ivory. Wearing gloves when harvesting and processing the fruits is advisable.
Soak the seeds in chamomile tea before sowing to disinfect them. After sowing, keep the substrate moist at all times and do not let the temperature drop below 25°C. Temperatures of 26°C to 32°C are ideal. It usually takes up to 5 weeks for the first seedlings to appear. It can take five to six months from sowing to ripe fruit.
Bhut Jolokia is a chili species from north-east India, also known as the “ghost chili”. In the Indian states of Assam and Nagaland the chilies are traditionally used in cooking, especially in fish and meat dishes. The heat of the Jolokia is also used in medicine, for example to relieve pain. In 2007 it was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the hottest chili in the world, with a heat level of over one million Scoville units. This orange variant is also very hot.
